Dr Tariq Idrees BDS(Manc) MFDS RCS(Edin) from Carisbrook Dental, Manchester, continues his advocacy of motorised injection systems for patient and dentist comfort. 
Today there is an increasing choice of greatly improved motorised injection systems that provide a slow, steady and gentle flow of anaesthesia. After extensive research, and thanks to their UK distributor, Evident, for allowing me to first trial the system in my own practice before purchase, I have decided to phase out my old system and introduce the CALAJECT™ computer-assisted local anaesthesia system across my five surgeries.
The unit has three easy-to-use programme settings for intraligamental + PDL (PerioDontal Ligament), infiltrations and palatal and regional nerve blocks that can be operated by a separate foot controller included with the system or by the foot controller of your own dental unit. Compared with my previous system, there is no need to buy additional special consumables as the CALAJECT works with standard dental needles and cartridges, helping to reduce my practice overheads.
I still use the same protocol as I always have, first applying a topical anaesthesia then allowing the CALAJECT to inject the anaesthesia really slowly, taking anything from 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on the procedure involved. I would say that 9 out of 10 of my patients feel absolutely nothing, and in my opinion, relaxed patients make for a relaxed dentist.

Making the switch to CALAJECT was a no-brainer for me; I wanted to deliver high quality patient-centred care through modern, simple-to-use equipment. The key features of CALAJECT that allow me to achieve this are:
