Musculo-skeletal disorders: are you at risk?

The simple answer to that question is ….Yes! All dental professionals, even those who practise part-time, are at risk of developing musculo-skeletal disorders over time.

From 2006 to 2012, Dentists’ Provident, the UK and Ireland’s leading provider of income protection insurance to dentists, received on average 250 new claims a year for musculo-skeletal disorders from the dental profession.

Supporting members with their loss of earnings, according to their individual plans, they reportedly paid out over £1.2 million for musculo-skeletal disorders in 2012. The largest areas of claims paid, for conditions which could be attributed to postural issues associated with dental work, were back pain (over £135,000), carpal tunnel syndrome (over £80,000) and over £400,000 for musculo-skeletal problems. Based upon their experience, they predicted claims would carry on increasing year on year.

Back and neck pain in dentists is often caused by the repeated flexion and rotation of the upper trapezius muscle, which leads to the development of neck, shoulder and back problems. Many dental professionals live with pain on a daily basis, struggling with the vicious cycle of trying to get comfortable whilst caring for their patient and operating dental equipment all at the same time. This can often result in physical and mental stress which has a detrimental effect on both work and home life, and in extreme cases can lead to a permanent injury or a career-ending disability.

It’s been well documented that ‘prevention’ of musculo-skeletal disorders is much better than ‘cure’, as once you start to experience neck or back pain, it is hard to get rid of. Similarly, much has been written about the benefits of ergonomic working practises and making sure you have the right equipment that allows you to retain a neutral posture throughout the working day.

It’s worth doing an assessment of your working environment and the equipment you use and considering an investment in ergonomic furniture and/or a pair of loupes and a light. Even if you’re not experiencing any discomfort at the moment, musculo-skeletal disorders are an insidious condition that can creep up on you unawares.

You may think it won’t happen to you, but unless you take measures now to keep it at bay, you ARE at risk… and the stakes are high.
