Lessons in Magnification

Lana Gilchrist is delighted that some courses are starting to incorporate a ‘quality of life’ element into their programme.

One of the most common reasons for early retirement amongst dentists is due to neck and back problems and we are all at risk, as musculoskeletal complaints can plague those who aren’t equipped with the right apparatus.

Many dentists rely on the methods they were
taught at dental school and if they aren’t using the most advanced equipment or implementing the correct procedures to ensure career longevity, then we as a profession are failing them. It is for this reason that I am delighted to see that some dental courses are incorporating a ‘quality of life’ element to their programme.

When starting my Advanced General Dental Practice MSc at Birmingham University, some of the objectives of the programme were:

  • To provide you with the opportunity to enhance your clinical knowledge, insight and expertise in areas directly relating to your practice;
  • To enhance the quality of care provided to your patients;
  • To provide a base for enjoyable personal professional development; and
  • To improve your employability in a highly competitive job market.

Each of these objectives relates to a dentist’s quality of life, both personally and professionally, and can be easily achieved by making one simple change in working practice – in the form of loupes and lights!

Hands-on with loupes

Some dentists on the course were wearing loupes when conducting treatment on their phantom heads and some weren’t working with loupes, but what was surprising was the comparison of the seated position and neck angulation of these dentists with those who were working without. Our course lecturer and physiotherapist, Fiona Blackman, individually assessed our posture and seating position and stressed that delegates who wore magnification loupes during treatment would maintain the best working posture, helping improve performance in providing an enhanced quality of care to patients.

See for yourself

The clarity of magnified vision is flawless when working within a patient’s mouth and my posture has dramatically changed for the better. My loupes are used for all patient treatment procedures, examinations, fillings, layered composites, bridges and crowns, and even cosmetic dentistry. I see the improved results, especially when undertaking root canal work.

Improved outlook

It’s visible to see the effects magnification loupes accompanied by lighting provides. It’s enabled me to provide high-quality patient treatment with even higher job satisfaction. Investing in equipment like individually custom-fitted loupes can enable you to enjoy day-to-day work and life outside the practice.

It’s true to say that I’m a guilty fan of loupes and I honestly couldn’t work without them. Wherever dentistry takes me, my loupes and LED light accompany me!
