Loupes and lights – What’s your excuse?

Magnification and light play a very important role in delivering high-quality dentistry and patient care, allowing the practitioner to see fine details more easily and work with more precision, increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of clinical performance.

However, despite the benefits, many dental professionals do not wear loupes and lights, especially young, newly qualified dentists. Here are some of the excuses and their answers:

EXCUSE NO. 1 – “I’ve tried loupes and didn’t like them.”

Some people try a pair of loupes and give up at the first hurdle – perhaps they felt uncomfortable or the magnification was too high or too low. Perseverance is the answer here: the right pair of loupes should be individually tailored to you and your needs – it’s not a case of one size fits all.

EXCUSE NO. 2 – “I have perfect eyesight, so I don’t need loupes.”

Even so-called 20:20 vision cannot compete with the benefits that magnification provides.

If you do require glasses for normal vision, then prescription lenses can be placed in the loupes, unless you wear contact lenses. There are even multifocal prescription lens options.

EXCUSE NO. 3 – “Loupes and lights are only for complex, intricate procedures… my clinical performance is fine.”

Once you’ve experienced working with loupes, you’re certain to see that they are useful for everyday procedures as much as they are for more complex ones. The level of magnification you require will depend on the procedures you are undertaking; many practitioners start with a low-magnification loupe and work their way up the scale to start alternating between levels, using a 2.8x loupe for general check-ups and turning to their high-magnification loupes for more detailed, delicate procedures.

EXCUSE NO. 4 – “Loupes are another costly factor to consider.”

The saying “you get what you pay for” is true when it comes to purchasing loupes. Cost can be a decisive factor when selecting loupes, but it certainly shouldn’t come before comfort. Loupes should be considered a long-term investment – after all, your vision is essential to your career. What you need to consider is the long-term health gain and clinical performance improvement over financial cost.

EXCUSE NO. 5 – “Loupes are unfashionable and my patients don’t react well to them.”

With vast developments in dentistry, loupes are now considered something of a fashion accessory within the practice. Wearing loupes and light in practice adds a sense of professionalism as it assures patients that you can see the entire operating field clearly, have invested in and are using the latest equipment and are competent in providing them with the optimum oral care they deserve.
